 Od ujedinjenja Nemačke, proglašenog u Versajskoj palati 1871. godine, upoznali smo šest različitih verzija: Drugi rajh, Vajmarsku republiku, Treći rajh, Zapadnu Nemačku vezanu za SAD, Istočnu Nemačku vazala SSSR-a, ujedinjenu Nemačku. Sa Fridrihom Mercom rađa se nova, Nemačka kakvu do sada istorija nije upoznala: naoružana, a demokratska; jaka, ali ne destruktivna; lider, a ne hegemon; zaštitnica Evrope, a ne njena razorna bomba u grudima. Rečju, rađa se „evropska Nemačka”, slična onoj kako ju je zamišljao Tomas Man.
