About this listen

Growing up in a segregated society meant that I had no idea what of what the Black experience of South Africa was like. Segregation meant that black people had to get permission and possess a passport with a visa to work and live in the White areas of South Africa, their own country. It was a wake up call when I spent my first night in a squatter camp called Crossroads on the outskirts of Cape Town which caused me to abandon living in a white area. I had discovered a new world that brought me great joy.
