• Questions: are they a skill?
    Aug 16 2025

In this short podcast, two AI hosts do a great job of "deep diving" into my blog post titled, "Questions: are they a skill?

Consider this: if we don’t know what to ask, how will we know what to learn?

In the digital world, the questions we ask shape the answers we get — and the decisions we make. But here’s the thing: most of us start with the wrong question. We jump straight to “Which app is best?” or “Why won’t this work?” without stopping to think about what we actually need.

In design and in digital work, the ability to ask better questions is more valuable than memorising shortcuts or learning the latest tool. And the good news? It’s a skill you can start practising right now.

  • Wait – Isn't the Web the Internet?
    Jul 22 2025

In this episode of the Mind Your Gaps podcast, two AI hosts delve into Dr. Jan Jervis's human-written blog post, Wait – Isn't the Web the Internet?, in which she discusses whether the Web (short for World Wide Web) and the Internet are actually the same thing (they are not)!

Dr. Jervis emphasises how crucial this understanding is, particularly for non-designers who will be part of our dynamically changing future. Navigating how we access and interact with information, especially now that we have AI "agents" at our disposal, is becoming almost essential for us all.

Be sure to listen to the podcast and check out the full article at janjervis.com.au.

  • Imagine a Future with no Internet?
    Jul 4 2025

In this podcast, "Imagine a future with no Internet," by Dr Jan Jervis, PhD, her two AI hosts invite you to engage in a thought experiment and consider the profound transition our world is experiencing that is not just technological, but also human and energetic.

Jan's central premise explores how the disappearance of the Internet would redefine human work, the tools we use, and what we value as a society. Her work explores the surprising notion that some AI systems, specifically "On-Device AI" or "Edge AI" and "Custom AI Installations," can still function offline, whereas most widely used cloud-based AI systems cannot.

Ultimately, Jan suggests a world without the Internet could see a decisive shift towards more "human-first experiences" and human community networks. It would emphasise the renewed importance of timeless human skills, such as design literacy, creative thinking, emotional intelligence, storytelling, and sensemaking, for survival and thriving.

Jan Jervis prompts us to consider how we would integrate the wisdom gained from the digital age into this new reality, rather than simply reverting to a pre-Internet past. Read the blog post here: https://janjervis.com.au/future-with-no-internet/

  • Why Value Design? Part 2
    Jun 6 2025

This podcast is the exciting second part of a series called “What is Design?” written by (human) Dr Jan Jervis, PhD. Her two AI hosts dive into her article about the value of design and its impact on our daily lives and the economy. They invite us to think about whether we should give design more appreciation.

They discuss studies that identify how the value of design in companies that clearly embrace design strategies results in significantly higher profits. However, this evidence is still not enough for many leaders to recognise the economic benefits of design. Jervis argues this is most likely because there is no universally agreed-upon definition of what design truly is.

The hosts also highlight that design is a uniquely human activity that has played a role throughout history. While design itself is neutral, its results can vary—sometimes having a positive impact and other times not so much. They illustrate this with examples like Winston Churchill, who established a design council to help revitalise the British economy, even before the end of World War II.

The conversation then turns to the exciting crossroads of design today, especially with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). The hosts emphasise the importance of human input in shaping the future of design. The podcast wraps up by emphasising the importance of understanding “design” to encourage collaboration and drive progress. To help with this, Jervis provides some handy tools, including a handbook and a framework, to create a shared understanding of what design can be.

The Design Dilemma – Why Defining Design is So Hard

This podcast is hosted by two AI hosts who "deep-dive" into my (human-written) blog post, in which I examine the significant challenges associated with defining the term "design."

It's fascinating to hear their lively discussion and how they interpret the issues I discuss in the blog post. It is almost hard to remember that they are not humans talking!

The interview focuses on my key points. For example, the word "design" is so commonly used; why do we even need to ask the question, "What is design?" Yet the truth is, we all have personal assumptions about what design means, and we often assume our perspective is the same as everyone else's! Then, the communication issues we can experience in a collaborative environment, especially when it involves non-designers and designers, have an unseen impact on businesses.

The purpose of my work and experimentation with this podcast is to raise awareness of the assumptions surrounding our understanding of design meanings. Let me know what you think.
