Jaques Anquetil fu uno dei più forti ciclisti della storia. Vinse cinque Tour de France, fu il primo a conquistare tutte e tre le maggiori competizioni (Tour, Giro e Vuelta), iniziò nel 1953 a soli 19 anni. Più tattico che spettacolare, in quel suo ciclismo faticoso e spietato, in quel suo modo radicale ed estremo di prendere la vita, Jacquot non metteva mai malizia. Perché quello era il modo che aveva scelto per combattere le convenzioni e sconfiggere la stupida prevedibilità. E pazienza se poi il pubblico non gradiva, se qualcuno era sempre pronto a criticarlo. Perché per lui quello era il prezzo: o tutto o niente.
