Jess had never had the chance to "witness" any of the out-and-out craziness that is Mad Max: Fury Road when it came out in 2015: the wild vehicles, the War Boys, Immortan Joe (who will be referred to by a...*ahem*...different name most of the way through this episode), and the convoy of Max and Furiosa looking to find the Green Place. It goes about as well as you would expect in an Australian post-apocalyptic setting.

We're going to talk about women taking back power, bands suspended on top of big rigs, the "show don't tell" approach in movies, and a whoooooooole lotta weirdness. Also, Jess' "live tweet" style reactions are priceless. So grab a drink, but don't get addicted to the water.

Saved! is a movie Matt had always seen at the video rental stores but had never checked out. Maybe it's because it came out around the same time as Mean Girls (possibly), maybe it's because he didn't know it was supposed to be a satire (maybe), or maybe it's because he was too busy watching pretentious hipster movies (most definitely).

Jess has seen a couple of the newer James Bond films with Daniel Craig, but never anything starring the original 007, Sean Connery. He's pretty to look at and everything, but in a spy movie made primarily for a male audience interested in spy movies and "being cool" in the 1960's...well, I think you might have an idea how Jess felt about A LOT of this one.

But this just means there is lots to talk about! There's Auric Goldfinger (great name), the arguable best Bond villain of all time, and his stalky Korean henchman Oddjob (even greater name), who may or may not be a fridge. There's the various women (with way more sexist names, mostly) that are not given a lot of agency. And there's Bond, his car, and the only thing he actually fears: a castration laser beam.

Matt read this book way, way, waaayyyyyy back in the day (old man jokes!), this this initial film adaptation from 2005 was never one he sought out. He would probably blame this on fantasy just not being his genre, but Jess isn't high on the genre either and she still watched the film when it came out. Either way, he's out of excuses now!

Grab a handful of the most authentic Turkish Delight you can find (turns out that Big Turk bars are not so authentic...) as Matt and Jess discuss allegories, repressive British society, back hair treasure trails, and how big of a badass Tilda Swinton is. They also ask the question all Canadian viewers will have: "Are all British children just immune to the cold?"

Steel Magnolias was HUGE in 1989 when it came out. Matt was only 7 years old, so he can perhaps be forgiven for not watching it then. His parents may not have approved of him hearing some of Ouiser Boudreaux's colourful language...

There's a lot to talk about with this film! So many wonderful strong female characters, so many head-scratching decisions related to Easter eggs, so many times where the 1980s felt like the 1950s, and Shirley MacLaine...just give us all of the Shirley MacLaine. While she has seen many Pixar films, including most of the other ones released in the 2010s, Jess had never seen Inside Out. She was, however, very familiar with getting random songs and ad jingles stuck in her head for no good reason. Thankfully, this movie helped explain that! She felt seen...and attacked.

As you can imagine with a movie about our own emotions, she had all sorts of responses! She was wheeze-laughing less than 3 minutes in because of Sadness (the character, not the emotion...), she was perturbed at Riley's parents, she was annoyed at Joy (the character, not the emotion...) for being a control freak, and she was emotional at Riley's imaginary friend Bing Bong ("That Cotton Candy Elephant Dolphin Thing"). Who would be her voice of Anger (the character, not the...look, you get it), and would it be constantly reading the newspaper? We chatted about all these thoughts and more before they went off to be stored in long term memory!
