Paulus daagt Filemon uit om zijn weggelopen slaaf Onesimus terug in huis te nemen en om hem niet langer als zijn slaaf en eigendom te behandelen maar om hem als zijn broeder in Christus te omarmen. Dit terwijl Filemon volgens het Romeins recht en gebruik, Onesimus zwaar kon straffen tot zelfs ombrengen voor het plegen van de misdaad tegen hem als zijn meester.
