About this listen

According to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, there are around 1.8 million sanitation workers in India, who are involved in various aspects of cleaning and waste management. Due to the nature of their work, sanitation workers are exposed to a range of health hazards and occupational risks, including exposure to toxic chemicals, biological waste, and other hazardous materials. According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in 2019, only 37% of sanitation workers in urban areas had access to personal protective equipment, such as gloves, masks, and boots. Even after working in extreme conditions their efforts to protect the environment goes unacknowledged and increasing their risk to different health hazards. The Environmental Outlook interviewed Geeta Naik, President and Pinky Sethi, Secretary from ‘Sagar SHG group’ which is handling the waste of Nayagarh Municpality by working at MCC MRF from the past two years. Through their tireless efforts, these unsung heroes have ensured safe sanitation services and made people aware of safe sanitation practices, creating a positive impact on the environment.
