Appartenente a una famiglia di antica nobiltà, a partire dal 1800 e fino alla morte quattordici anni dopo, rinunciò a ogni titolo nobiliare e si firmò semplicemente «D.-A.-F. Sade». Per il periodo rivoluzionario utilizzò anche lo pseudonimo Louis Sade. Fu autore di tutta una serie di classici della letteratura erotica, drammi teatrali, testi vari e saggi filosofici, molti dei quali scritti mentre si trovava in prigione. Sade passò molti anni in manicomio verso la fine della vita, forse affetto da una forma di quello che poi si chiamerà disturbo borderline di personalità e comportamenti sporadicamente antisociali.
