About this listen

Michael Shafar is a stand up comedian from Melbourne, currently based in London. We’ve known each other and been friends for years, but I still didn’t really know that much about Shaf’s family life other than the fact that he’s Jewish. In this wonderful conversation he told me some stories about his grandparents surviving Nazi death camps in WWII, and explained various elements of Jewish culture and community to me. I’ve been thinking a lot about the way that I used to use drinking to deal with difficult moments/feelings in life, and how that is definitely something I learned from the wider culture I was raised in. The Jewish culture that Shafar is a part of doesn’t quite see alcohol in the same way, and we spoke about how different cultures have different responses to life’s hardships, and where that might come from. Super interesting chats with an incredibly smart and funny man who I’m glad to call a friend. Enjoy!
