Em Postl and Thomas Hoeller on Streams, Improvisation, and Working with Poetry

  • Summary

  • Alex and Karen chat with musicians Em Postl and Thomas Hoeller about Streams Poetry Project, their music collaboration that transforms poetry through vocals and guitar. They give an in-depth look into the natural evolution of this project over the last 8 years, from the organic formation of the project that began with some improvisation over a book of poetry by Rumi, to their current focus of working with more local poets and getting their songs recorded. They examine their love of stream-of-consciousness style improvisation (which informed the name of the project); how they vibe off of one another; and how using intuition rather than intellectualizing their source material has allowed them to explore and give new life to works that they love.
