 En el punto de inflexión de los 80s todavía el post-punk tenía cosas que decir. Algunos mantenían la oscuridad y la violencia latente de las guitarras (Party day). Otros seguían experimentando y bifurcándose por cualquier estilo (Death In June, Dead Can Dance, Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel, Coil, Psychic TV,...) Un tipo de Sri Lanka apareció en San Francisco para perpetuar la memoria de Ian Curtis: Glorious Din. Al mismo tiempo, en Denver, Colorado, los Soul Merchants practicaban una suerte de deathrock psicodélico. Y en Inglaterra, la llama del intenso after-punk seguía viva gracias a bandas como Red Lorry Yellow Lorry. Unos buscaban el éxito, pero otros se sentían cómodos haciendo arte desde el underground.
