Grupos como Three Johns y That Petrol Emotion proponen un discurso de guitarras vanguardistas, escapando ya de la estela post-punk. Se esboza el futuro rock alternativo, con pioneros como Hüsker Dü, Dinosaur Jr. o Sonic Youth, e irrumpen en escena unos desconocidos My Bloody Valentine, todavía con un sonido de garage gótico, antes de la explosión shoegaze.
