 अपने राज्य के विस्तार को लेकर पृथ्वीराज चौहान हमेशा सजग रहते थे और इस बार अपने विस्तार के लिए उन्होने पंजाब को चुना था. इस समय संपूर्ण पंजाब पर मुहम्मद शाबुद्दीन गौरी का शासन था, वह पंजाब के ही भटिंडा से अपने राज्य पर शासन करता था. गौरी से युध्द किए बिना पंजाब पर शासन नामुमकिन था, तो इसी उद्देश्य से पृथ्वीराज ने अपनी विशाल सेना को लेकर गौरी पर आक्रमण कर दिया. अपने इस युध्द मे पृथ्वीराज ने सर्वप्रथम हांसी, सरस्वती और सरहिंद पर अपना अधिकार किया
