About this listen

The Herman Darrow Lab (hermandarrowlab.com) at the University of Minnesota is led by Dr. Alex Herman in the Department of Psychiatry and Dr. David Darrow in the Department of Neurosurgery. We study the brain networks of mood, behavior, and cognition in people living with motor disorders, psychiatric disorders, and chronic pain. We bring Psychiatry and Neurosurgery together using implant technologies and other trans-diagnostic tools like TMS, EEG, and cognitive remediation in an effort to improve the quality of life to affected patient populations. We are excited to debut our new podcast entitled "Craniotomy: Peering into the minds of those on the edge of cognition and neuromodulation."© 2023 Craniotomy Biological Sciences Hygiene & Healthy Living Science

  • Episode 12 - Neurodiversity and Spectrum Conditions through Computational Modeling
    Oct 11 2022

Dr. Iris Vilares from the Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota reflects on her experience with understanding the role of uncertainty in decision-making with Dr. Herman and Dr. Darrow. They discuss how computational modeling has surprising implications for understanding neurodiversity and spectrum conditions such as borderline personality disorder and its stigma.

  • Episode 11 - Using Neural Modeling and Simulation to Understand Human Cognition and Age-Related Decline
    Jul 20 2022

Neuroscientist Dr. Brad Voytek in the Department of Cognitive Science at UC San Diego uses neural modeling and simulation to understand the physiological basis of human cognition and age-related decline. Drs Voytek, Darrow and Herman discuss the role of oscillations in the brain, the relationship between noise, oscillations, and behavior as well as Dr. Voytek’s unique journey from Uber to a successful computational neuroscientist.

  • Episode 10 - Medical History and Future Prospects for Parkinson's Research
    Apr 29 2022

Join Dr. Herman and Dr. Darrow for an in depth discussion of Parkinson’s disease with world expert Dr. Jerrold Vitek, Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of Minnesota and lead PI of the Udall Center for Excellence in Parkinson’s Disease. Listen in as a psychiatrist, neurologist, and neurosurgeon discuss Dr. Vitek’s career in deep brain stimulation, the nonmotor challenges that come with Parkinson’s disease,  and how new research underway at the University of Minnesota and elsewhere may lead to novel types of deep brain stimulation stimulation to target both motor and cognitive brain circuits.
