Phao-lô viết thư này hơn 2000 năm trước. Ở đây “lề thói” tượng trưng cho những yếu tố cơ bản của Luật pháp dẫn đến một cuộc sống đức tin chiếu lệ theo Luật pháp. Người Do-thái từng học biết mọi thứ trong một “yeshiva”. Chính sứ đồ Phao-lô đã được rèn luyện dưới một giáo sư nổi tiếng tên là Ga-ma-li-ên và được dạy kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời qua Luật pháp. Đấy là tại sao sứ đồ Phao-lô gọi đó là “những yếu tố” vẫn bị ở dưới Luật pháp, học hỏi Luật pháp và thực hành Luật pháp thậm chí ngay sau khi Chúa Jêsus đến.
