Hoofdstuk 8 kan waarschijnlijk omschreven worden als het belangrijkste hoofdstuk van het Boek Romeinen. Door de verschillende thema’s die in dit hoofdstuk aan bod komen, openbaart Paulus ons hoe wonderbaarlijk het werk van de gerechtigheid van God is.
Het eerste thema is: “Zo is er dan nu geen verdoemenis voor degenen, die in Christus Jezus zijn, die niet naar het vlees wandelen, maar naar den Geest” (Romeinen 8:1). Dit betekent dat hoe vulgair en vernederend we ook in het vlees zijn, de gerechtigheid van God ons van al onze zonden heeft verlost.
