He won the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Francis Parkman Prize from the Society of American Historians, a Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He was also a finalist for the Pulitzer and James Tait Black Prizes. A previous memoir, The Splendid Things We Planned, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Autobiography.
