Blankenburg hat knapp 20.000 Einwohner und liegt in Sachsen-Anhalt, etwa in der Mitte zwischen Wernigerode, Halberstadt, Quedlinburg und Thale. Die historische Altstadt schmiegt sich an den Blankenstein, auf dem heute das Schloss Blankenburg thront. Unterhalb des Schlosses befindet sich das „Schlosshotel Blankenburg“, das selbst aussieht, wie ein Schloss.
