About this listen

Behold your handiwork is a historical novel based in New York City in 1871. It is the true story of a 21 year old Paterson, New Jersey girl who is forced by society to seek a very dangerous abortion from a New York City doctor.

The doctor, who was formerly a saloon keeper, had advertised his services in the New York Herald newspaper and purchased his medical certificate for $40.

When the girl died, the doctor stuffed her body in a trunk and tried to ship it off to Chicago. It didn’t take long for the body to be discovered and the story to become headline news across the country. This is the story of that young woman and the reporter who exposed the crime that became known as The Great Trunk Mystery.
