About this listen
In 2022, Latine-owned businesses contributed a staggering $3.6 trillion to the U.S. economy — an amount equivalent to the world’s fifth-largest GDP. Yet, these businesses receive less than 2% of venture capital funding. This isn’t just a statistic; it’s a profound opportunity waiting to be unleashed.
Here at AngelFamilia we believe it’s critical for Latine investors to become aware and involved in this space to help close the often mentioned “funding gap” for Latine founders.
Gerardo “Jerry” Miguel Rosenkranz is often credited as the first modern Latine angel investor, who made critical early investments in the 90’s in Latin American companies like Starmedia, MercadoLibre, and Patagon. Like most angels, there were successful and less successful investments, but his conviction in the opportunity of the internet to play a large role in developing Latin America ended up being prophetic. Read more about his life from Fred Wilson at Union Square Ventures.
Now, angels like Marcia Chong Rosado invested in Flora Fertility because she wanted to invest in solutions she wanted to use or see used for the next generation. Angel Pedro Otálora, called himself a “newbie” and jumped into early-stage investing when he found a like minded group of angel investors willing to share the burden of sourcing and conducting due diligence on investing opportunities. Angels like Nicole Cuellar-Lopez, a seasoned investor, leverages the power of communities like Pipeline Angels and her alumni networks to access deals.
Latine businesses face significant barriers. Limited access to capital, systemic biases, and fragmented support networks have kept their economic potential largely untapped. While many are familiar with Venture Capital investing via traditional VC firms, less are aware that accredited investors can both directly invest in companies and can invest via groups of angel investors (also known as angel syndicates).
The path to democratizing capital for Latine entrepreneurs lies not just in institutional funding, but in empowering individual investors to play a more active role. Angel investing represents a critical, often overlooked mechanism for breaking down systemic barriers. Unlike traditional venture capital, which often requires large minimum investments and operates through opaque networks, angel syndicates can offer a more accessible entry point. These collaborative investment groups allow accredited investors to pool their resources, share due diligence, and invest in promising Latine-led startups that might otherwise be overlooked.
Organizations like Angeles Investors and the Hispanic Wealth Project are pioneering this approach, creating structured platforms where individual investors can learn, network, and invest together. By lowering individual investment thresholds, providing educational resources, and building community-driven investment networks, these groups are not just providing capital — they’re creating a cultural shift in how Latine entrepreneurship is valued and supported.
This approach goes beyond a mere financial transaction; it’s about building generational wealth, challenging historical exclusion, and creating a more inclusive innovation ecosystem that recognizes the extraordinary potential of Latine entrepreneurs.Copyright Podcraftr
