Eine Frau wartet auf ihren Mann, zwanzig Jahre war er im Krieg und auf Irrfahrten. Als er, in der Verkleidung eines greisen Bettlers, zurückkehrt, ist die Frau von Freiern belagert, nur durch List hat sie sich deren Drängen entzogen. Die Rache des Mannes ist blutig. Gabriel Faurés einzige Oper stellte 1913 die wartende Frau in den Mittelpunkt: „Pénélope“ fokussiert, in klassischer Formvollendung, ihre inneren Zustände. In der Erstaufführung an der Bayerischen Staatsoper zeigt die Regisseurin Andrea Breth das Warten der Pénélope in der Monotonie alltäglicher Wiederholungen – und als weibliche Form des Widerstands.
