Claude Debussy fand in dem gleichnamigen symbolistischen Schauspiel des belgischen Dichters Maurice Maeterlinck sein Ideal eines Opernstoffes verwirklicht. Seine einzige Oper Pelléas et Mélisande aus dem Jahr 1902 ist eine Tragödie der leisen Töne, voller Andeutungen und Ahnungen und schillernder Klangfarben. Regisseurin Jetske Mijnssen sucht und findet die Menschen hinter den Symbolen.
