About this listen

JOHN STEWART McLENNAN was a businessman, historian, author, newspaper publisher, and politician; He was born on November 3, 1853 in Montreal.

McLennan’s in-depth familiarity with the history of Louisbourg meant that he became a key resource person for the Dominion Parks Branch and its advisory body, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.

McLennan wrote "A Notable Ruin" and read the paper on November 10th, 1908 before the Nova Scotia Historical Society.

The audio is based on the text from "A Notable Ruin".

It is interesting to hear McLennan's point of view in 1908 on the possibility of reconstructing the 18th century town of Louisbourg. J. S. Mclennan would pass away on September 15, 1939.

In 1961, Parks Canada began the massive task of reconstructing approximately one quarter of the 18th century fortified town of Louisbourg.
