يقرر فى رومية 7 : 7 "إِذَنْ، مَاذَا نَقُولُ؟ هَلِ الشَّرِيعَةُ خَطِيئَةٌ؟ حَاشَا! وَلكِنِّي مَا عَرَفْتُ الْخَطِيئَةَ إِلاَّ بِالشَّرِيعَةِ" ثم يكمل بولس، "فَمَا كُنْتُ لأَعْرِفَ الشَّهْوَةَ لَوْلاَ قَولُ الشَّرِيعَةِ: «لاَ تَشْتَهِ!»" علاوة على ذلك، يضيف "وَلَكِنَّ الْخَطِيئَةَ اسْتَغَلَّتْ هَذِهِ الْوَصِيَّةَ فَأَثَارَتْ فِيَّ كُلَّ شَهْوَةٍ" أدرك بولس أنه كان ينتهك كل وصايا الله الـ 613. بعبارة أخرى أنه لم يكن سوى كتلة من الخطايا لا يستطيع إلا أن يرتكب الخطيئة لأنه من نسل الإنسان الأول آدم، الذى جُبل فى الإثم وحُبل به فى الخطيئة.
