พระเจ้าพรหมทัตครองราชสมบัติอยู่ในนครพาราณสี พระโพธิสัตว์บังเกิดในตระกูลพราหมณ์ชื่อว่า โกมาริยบุตร ในเวลาต่อมาโกมาริยบุตรนั้นออกบวชเป็นฤาษีอยู่ในหิมวันตประเทศ ครั้งนั้นมีเหล่าดาบสผู้มักเล่นคะนองไม่แม้จะกระทำกสิณบริกรรม และในสำนักของดาบสเหล่านั้นมีลิงอยู่ตัวหนึ่ง มันมักกระทำการเล่นคะนองอย่างดาบสทั้งหลาย เมื่อดาบสเหล่านั้นหลีกไปแล้ว พระโพธิสัตว์จึงมาอาศัยอยู่ในป่าแห่งนี้ เจ้าลิงเห็นจึงแสดงการเล่นคะนองแก่พระโพธิสัตว์เหมือนเคยแสดงแก่เหล่าดาบสทั้งหลาย ด้วยเหตุนี้พระโพธิสัตว์จึงให้โอวาทแก่ลิง เจ้าลิงดำรงตนด้วยความไม่ประมาท ถึงพร้อมด้วยศีลและอาจารมารยาท เพื่อเป็นผู้พ้นภัยจากความประมาท
