About this listen

In this episode of Relationships Unraveled, I discuss the critical distinction parents must make between parenting young children and teenagers. I explain that while parenting young kids from birth to age 12 should focus on teaching, the approach needs to shift to training once children reach adolescence at age 13. Teenagers are becoming young adults and it's essential that parents acknowledge and respect their growing independence rather than trying to control every aspect of their lives. I share how letting go of control and treating teenagers as individuals can help strengthen relationships. I also offer practical advice on shifting from a teaching to training style of parenting to help guide teenagers into adulthood. It is important to walk beside teenagers through the challenges of growing up rather than trying to carry them. I know this may be hard but it is a critical part of parenting adolescents. As always, I would love to hear what you thought of today's episode! Send me a DM on Instagram @marandakirk or an email at ru@marandakirk.com and let's have that conversation!
