About this listen

In the time of King Vikramaditya, a man named Thyagasheelan came seeking work. The king asked his wages, and without hesitation, Thyagasheelan demanded a thousand tolas of gold. Surprised, the king decided to test him and appointed him as the royal night watchman.

Thyagasheelan served with unwavering loyalty. One night, the king heard faint weeping from the graveyard and sent Thyagasheelan to investigate. There, under the moonlight, he found a beautiful woman crying.

She introduced herself as Rajya Aishwaryam—the very prosperity and grace of the kingdom. She said she was leaving the land, for the time of fortune was ending. Desperate to keep her, Thyagasheelan begged her to stay.

She agreed on one condition: he must offer his own son as a sacrifice at the nearby Kali temple.
