पहलगाम हे भगवान शिवाशी देखील संबंधित आहे. हिंदू परंपरेनुसार त्याचे जुने नाव बैल गाव होते
हिंदू मान्यतेनुसार, भगवान शिव यांनी अमरनाथ गुहेत प्रवेश करण्यापूर्वी येथे आपला बैल (नंदी) सोडला होता, ज्यामुळे हे गाव पूर्वी बैल गाव म्हणून ओळखले जात असे.
या बद्दल ची एक गोष्ट प्रचलित आहे. एकदा आई पार्वतीला भगवान शिवाच्या अमरत्वाचे कारण जाणून घ्यायचे होते. यानंतर भगवान शिव यांनी माता पार्वतीला सांगितले की यासाठी तिला योग्य अशा गुप्त ठिकाणी जाऊन अमर कथा ऐकावी लागेल.
