Inductive Bible Study Method:

Observe

  1. Observe = What does the text say?
  2. Pick 1-2 of these to observe in the text:
    1. Attributes of God
    2. Repeated words
    3. Lists
    4. Comparisons/contrasts
    5. Questions
    6. Commands
    7. Transition words
    8. Unfamiliar words

Interpret

  1. Interpret = What does the text mean?
  2. Interpretation looks at:
    1. Historical Context
    2. Literary Context
    3. Metanarrative of the Bible
    4. Redemptive History
  3. Ask yourself these questions in interpretation:
    1. What questions do you have about the text?
      1. Tip: This is where study Bibles and commentaries are really helpful!
    2. If you were to summarize the passage in one sentence, what would you say?

Apply

  1. Apply = What does the text mean for me today?
  2. Ask yourself these questions:
    1. What does this passage teach us about God?
    2. What does this passage teach us about humanity?
    3. Is there a command I need to obey?
    4. How does this point to Christ?
      1. Tips for finding the Christ connection:
        1. Does it show a need for Christ?
        2. Is there a promise or prophecy about Christ?
        3. Is Christ present in the text?
