 1985年8月12日、日本航空123便が群馬県上野村の御巣鷹の尾根に墜落し、520名が犠牲となった公式事故原因は、ボーイング社による後部圧力隔壁の不適切な修理とされているしかし、「急減圧はなかった」との主張や、自衛隊の訓練中に標的機が衝突したとする「事件説」など、今なお根強い異論が存在する事故後の32分間における乗員の必死の操縦や、乗客が遺した最後のメッセージは、悲劇の深さを物語るまた、米軍による救助申し出の拒否と救助活動の遅れは、後世に多くの議論を残したこの事故の遺産は、JALの安全啓発センター設立や遺族による「8・12連絡会」の活動、上野村での記憶継承教育活動など、多岐にわたる形で今日まで続いている。
