初回派遣地の南スーダンの空港に降り立った李。紛争を逃れた多くの国内避難民が暮らす文民保護区が、初の勤務地だ。そこではケニア人の熟練の助産師たちとのチームワークを通じ、物資が不足する現場での産科医療を学んだ。


派遣を重ねる中、アフリカでは出産がいかに命懸けなものかを痛感する現場に数多く立ち会う。妊娠中にマラリアに感染し、陣痛を訴えながら命を落とした10代の妊婦。自分の体への負担を覚悟の上で10回も妊娠する母親、そしてその切実な背景。


日本では当たり前の事が、当たり前ではない世界。困難な現場で様々なジレンマを感じつつ、産婦人科医として李が活動を続けるその理由とは？
