A Saúl se le había ordenado exterminar a todos los Amalecitas y su ganado. En lugar de hacerlo, salvó al rey y permitió que su pueblo tomara lo mejor de los bueyes y las ovejas.
Cuando Samuel le exigió cuentas por esto, Saúl dijo que lo hizo con la intención de ofrecer sacrificios a Dios; A lo cual Samuel responde “los sacrificios no son excusa para un acto de rebelión directa en contra de Dios”.

«Obedecer es mejor que los sacrificios, y prestar atención que la grasa de los carneros. »Porque la rebelión es como el pecado de adivinación, Y la desobediencia, como la iniquidad e idolatría»
