عن الرواية: كأنهم يخشون أن تنقشع آلام الفقر عن حياة الفقراء , و كأنهم يخافون أن ينجلى بؤس الفقر عن حياة الفقراء . إنهم يراقبونك دائماً ليروا ما إذا كنت تضعين قدمك فوق الأرض وأنتِ ذليلة أم لا , و يدققون نظراتهم لكى يروا ما إذا كان موظف أعمال كتابية فقير تبرز أصابعه قدميه من حذائه الممزق أم لا و يحدقون و يمعنون النظر لكى يتحققوا ما إذا كان كوعه يبرز من منتصف كم سترته أم لاثم يعود أحدهم إلى قصره المنيف و يكتب كل ما شاهده و دقق فى مشاهدته ليطبع ما يكتبه من الغثاء فى كتاب يتهافت عليه الأغنياء ليتأكدوا تماما و هم جلوس فى أماكنهم أن مظاهر فقر الفقراء لا تزال باقية , و أن آلام بؤس البؤساء مازالت مستمرة المساكين – فيودور دوستويفسكي
