今週、坂の上に訪ねてきてくださったのは、四国カブトガニを守る会の会長で東予郷土館の館長でもいらっしゃる篠原栄次さん。絶滅危惧種に指定され「生きている化石」とも呼ばれるカブトガニですが、篠原さんが子どものころには地元である旧東予市（現在の西条市）の海岸で当たり前に見られる生物だったそうです。篠原さんの祖父・栄吉さんがカブトガニの生態研究を始め、父の伴次さんが「東予市（現在は四国）カブトガニを守る会」を結成、そして栄次さんと三代つづけてカブトガニに関わり続ける篠原さんに、「実は面白い！カブトガニのヒミツ」と題して、「なぜ絶滅を免れたのか」「人間の命を守るカブトガニ」「カブトガニが棲む海を未来に」という３つのキーワードでお話を伺いました。
