Story
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Emma can be enjoyed as a charming love story, a detective story, and a comic and lively picture of English life 200 years ago. Austen's beautiful, clever, wilful but fallible heroine Emma Woodhouse believes she knows best. Perfectly content with her life she sees no need for either love or marriage, yet nothing pleases her more than meddling in the romantic lives of others.

Hard Times is Dickens's most political novel. Set in the industrial north of England, in Coketown, he examines the lives of working people, who are taught by the capitalists Gradgrind and Bounderby to think only of the facts of life and not to indulge in imagination. Gradgrind’s own children have been so educated and as a result are dysfunctional and disconnected from their feelings. Only the travelling circus company of Sleary seems to offer any hope of humanity in Coketown.

Publisher's Summary
Winner of Audible's 2017 Narrator of the Year Award
In an Audible Exclusive production, Golden Globe winner Joanne Froggatt gives a powerhouse performance of Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë's only published novel. This edition features an exclusive introduction written by Ann Dinsdale, Chief Curator of the Brontë Museum.
About the book
The unapologetic intensity with which Emily Brontë wrote this story ensures that it will forever be considered one of the greatest works of English literature. A passionate tale of a chaotic and often violent love, Wuthering Heights transcends your average romance and, with its Gothic undertones, takes the listener on a journey through one man's lustful hunt for revenge.
Believing he has been spurned by Cathy Earnshaw, the only woman he has ever loved, Heathcliff abandons the wild moors of Wuthering Heights, fervently wishing to reestablish himself as the wealthy gentleman he believes Cathy seeks. Having been successful in his ventures, he later returns to the adoptive family who raised him and hungrily seeks to punish those who once rejected him.
In an exclusive introduction written for this edition by Ann Dinsdale, Chief Curator of the Bronte Museum, discover how critical and public opinion of Wuthering Heights has changed over time.
About the author
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Emily is said to have had the most unusual character of all the Brontë sisters. A reserved character with few close acquaintances outside her family circle, Emily's dark and passionate nature is clearly reflected in her tale. Having been the consummate lover of animals and nature, in this book she also set out to paint an unforgettable picture of the stark and imposing moors that she so enjoyed walking along.
Having developed a highly intelligent writing style, Emily ensures that the listener is emotionally involved throughout and often even a little horrified at the events that take place. A true work of art, Wuthering Heights surpasses expectation with its Gothic love scenes and desolate landscapes. Emily Brontë's only published work, it stands alone and will forever imprint itself upon the listener's memory.
About the narrator
Joanne Froggatt is an English stage, film and television actress who shot to fame after her engaging portrayal of Downton Abbey's Anna Bates. Also celebrated for her roles in Dinnerladies, A Street Cat Named Bob, Murder in the Outback and Liar, Joanne has now been acting for over 20 years and brings a wealth of expertise to her narratives. Having voiced an Alice in Wonderland series as well as Audible's 2017 Thriller of the Year, Silent Child, Joanne succeeds once more in delivering an incredibly engaging performance in this unique and exquisite adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights.

I never tire of this story
This classic book is so beautifully narrated - it was a pleasure to listen too. I’ve always loved this gothic-style tale - but I think new listeners/readers need to be aware that this really is quite a dark tale - before they read it. Even though it’s a love story - it’s definitely not a romantic fairy tale. I highly recommend it.

Talented narration by Joanne Froggatt
Joanne Froggatt handles this beautifully. Pleasant, clean diction and a show of her talent in acting with subtle and emotive inflections keeps an older story feeling relatable and easier to consume (for me, at least).
She presents comfortable differentiation between character voices, more via careful expression and accent rather than dramatic tonal shifts.

Brilliant Narrator
I know I’m in the minority here but I found the story dreary and rather depressing. Most characters had little or no redeeming features. I couldn’t wait to finish it. I guess I was expecting the innocence and lightness of Jane Austin but nothing alike.

Fine
The book was fine. For me, it was good enough to listen to the end but I had problems. The sound quality was not perfect, I often got an echo in the recording to the point where I thought the editing included sound effects for impact. But soon realised, when this started to happen at uninteresting moments, that it was a defect. The narration was fine but I found the voice of Heathcliff to be very unconvincing with weird vocal cadences and inflections. I also found that Joanne Froggart does Mrs Bates/Nellie well but that's about it. The many layers of narration, coupled with the lack of differences for character voices made it difficult and needed high concentration. This did impact my experience significantly. The writing is interesting and the levels of narration with narration is clever and has merit as a literary device. I can't help but feel that Heathcliff was the victim in all of this. Perhaps that's the point? 🙂
