About this listen

Who Am I in This World? is the story of a long line of daring Gypsy women and a chain of generations bent by one girl who allowed herself to become who she really was. That girl is Rowena Marin.

Rowena’s community is called the Silversmiths and is settled in Romania. Although the ones who stayed behind were made slaves in the 19th century and were deported during World War II, they never gave up on their country. Listen carefully to hear the great-great-grandmother’s song, enslaved in her youth. Close your eyes, and see the caravan where Rowena’s grandmother was born. See the slum of Alexandria, where her mother grew up. Bathe yourself in the enticing smells of a Gypsy dinner of what is allowed or forbidden for these Romani women.

When Rowena follows “The Way” of her people to appease her family, she ultimately chooses to explore life beyond the label of her ethnicity. Run away with Rowena to Madrid, Bucharest, Dublin, and New York, where she cries the tears of loss, desperation, sadness, and joy. Follow her journey of twists and turns, where she finds the missing piece of her life: the courage to trust herself.
