About this listen

THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER

A TIMES BEST MEMOIR OF 2023

‘Grippingly vivid and pacey’ THE TIMES

‘A seven-year old girl on a seventy-foot yacht, for ten years, over fifty thousand miles of sailing’ SIMON WINCHESTER

'An astonishing almost day-by-day account of [a] hazardous journey and its legacy’ TELEGRAPH

‘This is a story of an epic childhood journey, so exciting and so shocking it is hard to know whether you’re reading about a dream or a nightmare… Wavewalker is thrilling, horrifying, beautifully written – I couldn’t put it down’ ED BALLS

Aged just seven, Suzanne Heywood set sail with her parents and brother on a three-year voyage around the world. What followed turned instead into a decade-long way of life, through storms, shipwrecks, reefs and isolation, with little formal schooling. No one else knew where they were most of the time and no state showed any interest in what was happening to the children.

Suzanne fought her parents, longing to return to England and to education and stability. This memoir covers her astonishing upbringing, a survival story of a child deprived of safety, friendships, schooling and occasionally drinking water… At seventeen Suzanne earned an interview at Oxford University and returned to the UK.

From the bestselling author of What Does Jeremy Think?, Wavewalker is the incredible true story of how the adventure of a lifetime became one child’s worst nightmare – and how her determination to educate herself enabled her to escape

‘A classic memoir of childhood. This is a book that every parent should read to consider the consequences of their midlife crises, and every child should read to learn how to deal with impossible mums and dads, as well as boils and barnacles’ Mail on Sunday 5*

‘An electrifying story about an extraordinary childhood, and Heywood tells it with remarkable clarity and assurance . . . an engrossing book that pitches the reader into the highs and lows of a young life spent in the “Wavewalker School of the Sea”’TLS

I found the honest and heart wrenching details of Sue’s journey totally engrossing. I am so impressed that she overcame fears of hurting family in the retelling, remaining clear and concise in her descriptions, most probably the outcome of being capable of surviving deep trauma while retaining an objective understanding of her predicament. I was pleased to learn she emerged into a fulfilling and loving later life along with the honour of receiving a CBE in 2024 for her services to business leadership.

Mesmerising story that had me sailing along

I couldn’t stop listening to this story. A story so relatable to me as I grew up for a period of time in isolation living on remote islands with my lighthouse keeper family. What an incredible experience to have had and I love the connection Suzanne still feels even though she had to fight so hard , her incredibly selfish parents, and the fact she would not have had an education if it hasn’t been for for own determination. I love that Suzanne narrated the story herself. Thanks for sharing.

Enjoyed this, very compelling balance between adventure and sorrow. A great way to put life and particularly parenting into perspective. Thanks Suzanne.

An incredible story of courage and determination- certainly brings parenting styles of that time into question- echo’s of my own childhood growing up in war zones - a brilliant read and definitely inspiring .

Thank you for sharing your story, i really enjoyed it. I felt admiration for you, afraid, sad and angry for you. But I loved your determination to break free, very inspiring.

Wonderful but heartbreaking

A very moving and compelling story, beautifully written. I felt the emotions of frustration, loneliness and hurt along with the author, as well as anger towards her parents for their selfishness and emotional neglect of their children. An inspiring story of survival and determination.

Wonderful engaging book that takes you on an exciting and sometimes harrowing journey. It highlights the importance of determination to keep going in often difficult circumstances, and the author inspires others to rise to a challenge. Great read indeed.

Gripping memoir

I couldn’t stop reading. What an incredibly strong person. I liked that she didn’t try to fill in some blanks- she was a child when things happened and talks about them as she experienced them, as opposed to drawing on other accounts and presenting it as her experience.

Incredible

Having heard a radio interview with Suzanne I was interested to read her book and I'm so pleased I did. Her upbringing was nothing less than extraordinary. I won't say more for fear of ruining the story and perhaps exposing some of my parental biases.
Suffice to say this is an interesting and easy listen as well as a peek at Suzanne's early life which was so different from that which we consider "normal".
We'll written and we'll read.
