Publisher's Summary

The end of the world is not such a bad thing for Russian weapons engineer Vlad Nardoir.

Really, his world ended six months ago when his wife died, and ever since then, things have been downhill. Soul-crushing medical debt. Favors to the Russian mafia. Now, asteroid. For Vlad, this is life in a nutshell.

But, in a wild twist of fate, he has found a way out. A chance to start fresh in a brand-new ultra-immersive MMORPG called Viridian Gate Online. Making the leap might kill him, but again, death is not such a bad thing for a man with nothing to live for.

Even in the virtual world, however, old grudges burn true, and the past is not as far gone as it seems. He must use his quick wits, rugged persistence, and peculiar set of skills as a weapons engineer to make a place for himself in this new world, or be forcibly dragged back into the very life he fought so hard to escape.

Great Start of Series

A great start to the series. Vlad is such a likeable character I couldn't help become invested in his journey. The world Building in this book is fantastic - I can easily picture the story taking place. I really enjoyed the narration. The distinct character voices & perfect pacing made this a very enjoyable listen. I look forward to more in this series

Sweet!

Because I already read other books in this world I wasn't surprised about some of the tragedy that befell our Russian Hero. I loved that this book gave us a background into this interesting character and I think I will listen to this book again after listening to the OG Viridian Gate book.

it's a trap but we manage escape...

it's a trap that you can see coming. but the main character manages to always escape. I got bored with it quarter of the way through. Save a credit wait for a sale.

A Great Addition!

I am a serious VGO fanatic, and I really love these additional branching, character driven, books in the series. I really like Vlad as a character and enjoyed hearing his tale. I figured that Vikas Adams would do an admirable Russian accent, but I must say he does some pretty decent female voices as well. Some men just sound silly sometimes. So bravo to everyone involved. Another winner in my book!

Boring

The book is boring.

I really enjoy the LitRPG genre, and this one started off well, but some things don't play out well - someone very important to the MC is reincarnated in the game and he's not suspicious *at all* - but it's fine because nothing becomes of it. That's a recurring theme - there's potential for stuff and nothing happens from it - OR - lots of stuff happens for no particular reason and few of the accomplishments feel earned. Maybe the most frustrating part of it all is how often he's saved by other characters throughout the book, it's this recurring thing of "I got my self in a bad situation, what will I do?!" then being whisked to safety by some random character - in one case literally out of nowhere, for the second time in less than 24 hours, and then they disappear from sight. He's got powerful abilities that aren't earned in the slightest, and he forgets the whole goal he had of starting his life over in VGO? There's a lot of action and stuff going on, but none of the outcomes feel earned and it all sort of falls flat.

The author's talented - I really enjoyed the first third of the book - but this feels like a mess once he gets into the main town until the book's finished.

Expert Role

I really like this book, though it did have some of the same issues as the first Firebrand book in repeating the same scene which feels weird to me having just come from those scenes recently. However, there are less of those scenes because Vlad is simply not as much in those first couple books as Abby is, and a lot more of what I really like from these side stories: showing scenes that were implied to happen but not shown before.
It’s a pretty big change going from Firebrand to Alchemical weaponeer because they are kind of at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to personality in a lot of ways, even if fundamentally there are a lot of similarities. Vlad has one of the most… extravagant personalities in the series, more so than any of the main charecters I’ve read so far, including Jack.
I liked that this book, like it’s title implies, focuses on crafting aspects of the game and I hope to see more in the next book.

Vlad is the best

I am so glad that someone decided to explore this wonderful character further. Vlad is one of the most intriguing characters in the series.

Excellent New VGO adventure

I can't recommend this audio enough as I think Hunter and Paxton have outdone themselves as this is my favourite of the side stories to VGO yet.
Vlad was always a great character with his Intelligence, inventiveness , broken English and his newbie status to how online gaming worked.
His life was hard as we knew, but this story opens new levels of hardship and shows us so much more that was hidden from us. I'm sorry almost to say he has replaced Cutter as my 2nd favourite and may even overtake Jack which is kinda worrying me slightly.
Without to many spoilers, which I cant do to those yet to discover this story have to say that Vlads narrative rivals Jack's in overmind manuipulation / destiny and he even may have almost as many enemies.
He also has some cool abilities yet to be used, and a great future I'm sure. Which until now has not been fully realised in other stories you may have came across yet.
Vikas does an outstanding job doing the Narration for Vlad and others which isn't easy replacing such a character when he is already ensconced in the main series audios.
If I could give 6 stars I would but I can only say when is the next audio out and are you finished it yet??
