Would you try another book written by Peter Temple or narrated by Michael Carman?

After listening to, and loving, Peter Hosking read 'The Broken Shore' I was looking forward to this book, only to realise too late that the narration was sub-par. Michael Carman would do well to listen to Peter Hosking's under-stated delivery and the way he let's the story breath.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Unfortunately every character was interpreted as a nasty piece of work. I couldn't connect with the main character for that reason.

A Peter Temple classic spoiled by a mediocre read

Despite the very high reputation of Peter Temple as a crime writer, I did not enjoy this tale of murder and corruption. Can the Victorian Police really be so awful - according to this depiction, they use the f-word about six times in a sentence, despise each other cordially, and regard all law-breakers as 'scum' or 'shit'. Reader Michael Carman read the story with appropriate harshness, and I did begin to follow the story about a third of the way through, but in the earlier parts there were a large number of characters with little identification beyond their names, and I could not, or could not be bothered, working out who was who. I wanted to care about the characters, even the lead detective Villani, but really could not.

It starts off a little clunky and the dialogue jumps around a bit; hang in there. Once you get use to the way it is written (read) you can settle down and enjoy a really good story.

Peter Temple seems to connect with my mind in some way. He writes what I see as Australia’s persona perfectly and as much as I love Peter Hosking as a narrator, this guy does an awesome job.
Enjoyed the book immensely and wish there were more. Like now and lots of them.
I’ve listened his books over and over and they reflect Australia.
