Publisher's Summary

Peter Carey's stunning, Booker Prize-winning novel about Australia's most famous outlaw.

As he flees the police, Ned Kelly scribbles his narrative in semiliterate but magically descriptive prose. To his pursuers he is a thief and a murderer. To his own people he's a hero for opposing the English. Ned, who saw his first prison cell at 15, has become the most wanted man in the wild colony of Victoria, taking over towns and defying authority.

Here is a classic outlaw tale, made alive by the skill of a great novelist. There are no sentences like these in all Australian literature, and yet they could only have grown from our soil.

Most adjectival special

An important story, with lasting significance. Peter has built a fine vessel for this important history. No lack of entertainment along the way. Many thanks.

Peerless Australia Literary Gold

Rarely does a book, performance and package so thoroughly deliver as this. Perhaps the first sacred text of our smashed together, weather beaten land, read with vigorous compassion and humour. Thank you for helping me re-experience the text with perhaps even greater reverence.

The ned I never knew.

Great book. Well presented and a joy to listen to. A fascinating snapshot into life in Australia in the late 1800's, as well as an excellent story of the Kelly gang, a story I was very unfamiliar with.

Heart wrenching story I could not stop listening.

Within the second chapter I had called most of my family members to purchase this audible story. I loved listening to it each night, having a better understanding of who Ned Kelly is. I now live on a big farm where the Kelly gang rode through and around. I enjoyed the Narrator I think he did an excellent job.

Wow!

Every Australian should read (listen) to this book. Full of great stories and anecdotes about what it was like living in the Bush in the late 19th century. "Ned" was clearly an intelligent bloke whom was fiercely loyal to his family and even loyal to people who didn't deserve it. He was a victim of circumstance, a victim of a corrupt system that stereotyped the Irish and treated them very harshly. "Ned" wouldn't cop their rubbish and stood up to them in a way that would amaze people these days. It cost him everything in the end, but he is a revered figure in aussie folklore and rightly so. Highly recommend this book. A real eye opener.

Definitely worth a listen

I really enjoyed this, not only did it give me the most accurate information about Ned Kelly it also gave me a little insight into what it was like living in Australia in the 1800’s. The only fault I could give if being fussy is the narrator at time’s didn’t have a variety of voices for the main female characters but I still enjoyed this audio book and would highly recommend it.

Didn't disappoint

Peter Carey's construction of the Ned Kelly story is sublime. The narration is near perfection. This is a perspective of Australian history that both disturbs and delights. Read it!!
