حيث سافر "حمد" على متن الدرجة الأولى كمرافق لـ "آل هاربر" وهما هنري وميرا هاربر حيث أصرّا أن يسافر معهما على السفينة ردًا لاستضافة "حمد" لهما في منزله، كلما جاءا لزيارة القاهرة، لأنه كان المرشد السياحي الخاص بهما، أو كما كان يُطلق عليه في ذلك الوقت "تُرجُمان". قضى حمد أيام الإبحارمعهم، لا يتحدث أو يقترب من أي شخص آخر، ولا يرد حتى على الحسناوات اللاتي حاولن التحدث معه، ولهذا تم تسميته من قبلهن بـ"الغامض."

وفي يوم غرق السفينة، كان "حمد" يتجول في الأرجاء، حسب روايته لأفراد عائلته، وسمع بالصدفة مراقب السفينة وهو يقول أن الجبل الجليدي شقّ بدنها من المنتصف، وأنهم سيغرقون لا محالة، فأسرع إلى صديقيه، وأبلغهما بالخبر، فاستعدا وأحضرا الملابس التي سيحتاجون إليها في هذه الليلة الباردة، بالإضافة لكلبهما Sun، ونتيجة لذلك تمكن ثلاثتهم من استقلال قارب الإنقاذ رقم 3...
