Story
Most entrepreneurs, even seasoned brand managers, launch first and then work on slowly transforming the new offering into a brand. A logical progression, I would agree. After all, how can you possibly launch as a brand if you don't have any customers or marketing outreach and - obviously, since you just launched a new offering - you have no legacy or advocates? The simple answer is by design. Design relates to the systematic process you have to adhere to, which is likely the primary reason you have sought to listen to this book.

A business parable about how to create a start-up that won't trap you when you want to sell it. According to John Warrillow, the number one mistake entrepreneurs make is to build a business that relies too heavily on them. Thus, when the time comes to sell, buyers aren't confident that the company-even if it's profitable-can stand on its own. To illustrate this, Warrillow introduces us to a fictional small business owner named Alex who is struggling to sell his advertising agency.

Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In recent months, the pandemic has forced us all to reevaluate our assumptions about health and safety and multiple acts of police brutality have challenged most of us to reconsider our responsibility for fighting racism. Yet in our daily lives, too many of us still favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt.

Publisher's Summary
A manifesto of business practices for those who sell ideas and advice, The Win Without Pitching Manifesto lays out 12 steps - in the form of proclamations - that owners of creative businesses can take to distance themselves from their competition, regain the high ground in their client relationships and learn to win business without first parting with their thinking or writing lengthy proposals. The 12 proclamations were written to inspire owners of independent creative businesses (e.g.: design firms and advertising agencies) to rethink how their services are bought and sold. Anyone who sells ideas or advice will find relevance in these teachings.

Great insights!
This book has very good points on how to position your business and expertise against the marketplace as a high value consultancy. It is leaning towards the creatives, but having that insight into the industry just makes it all the more fascinating.
Very well written and concisely written rules to go by especially in the selling process. There were trinkets of example scenarios of how he would engage with the client. I only wish more of that was infused, but I think that was done purposefully in order for the reader to think for themselves.
Overall, I enjoyed the listen and I will be seeking out more of Blair's work as I found great value on his insights.

My Favorite Business Book
This book is the Holy Grail of business books. Not just for “Creatives” either. For ALL business people. I know we have all read reviews where the reviewer says “I wish I had found this book a long time ago.” Well, I really do wish I would have had this book to read and study and memorize a long time ago. Hands down it’s the best book of any book I’ve read on any business related subject in my 30 years of reading these kinds of books. It’s so good that I got the Audible and I listen to it over and over and over whenever I am driving alone. I want everything Blair Enns teaches in this book to sink in and become second nature. I want to hear his advice in my head whenever I dealing with any situation that relates to any of the Proclamations.
This book has been a life-changer for my business and my work life. And I’m not a Creative. I’m a masonry contractor who builds things with blocks and bricks and stones.
After reading it once I confidently believed it’s worth 10X the selling price. After listening to the Audible at least 20 times now, I can confidently say it’s worth at least 100X the selling price.
It’s that good. And the reader is superb. She is new to narrating books I understand, but she is already one of the best put there. Based on her performance reading this book.
Get it. You won’t regret it.

Interesting
I think we all really know this information already, however putting it into practice is something we tend not to do. It is nice to see the manifesto encouraging proper pricing and proper respect for our own work. It’s put together very well, it outlines the reasons for smart pricing. It reiterates information we already know but are too afraid to stick to. So it is a very useful book as it clarifies the rationale that we should use every day when pricing creative work. I really recommend this book, even for those who work already with these principles, reading this book will re-focus and reinforce your pricing principles.

Brave but logical
This book was recommended by my employer and I can understand why. Some brave ideas but they actually make sense. Creative agencies have long been bad at making money and rely too much on trying to sell a big idea or giving away expertise.
