I love Rumpole

If you could sum up The Trials of Rumpole in three words, what would they be?

I'm completely biased.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It kept me settled way back in my easy chair. Like listening to an old friend.

What about Bill Wallis’s performance did you like?

I had no sense he was seeking my approval. In this respect, how like the great barrister himself. A lot of mumbling under his breath as to the Old Bull.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I love it when Rumpole allows himself to feel real affection for,

Any additional comments?

I have heard a number of narrators do Rumpole and somehow I've been able to get very comfortable with all of them.

... There is Nothing New Under the Sun

If you have seen the Rumpole of the Bailey television series you will find these to be a simplified version of those episodes.

Sarcastic, witty and brilliant

I have 4/5 for narrator because I thought Patrick Tull performed the character of Rumpole sightly better, but in reality this is superb. All the voices are great including Rumpole and the stories are interesting and characters hilarious with a nice message in each one for those of us who aren't great at the whole symbolism thing...

A very enjoyable read

Where does The Trials of Rumpole rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It has become a familiar favourite, I have listened to this book several times.

What other book might you compare The Trials of Rumpole to, and why?

It is a good book, most of the other Rumpole books are as good.

Have you listened to any of Bill Wallis’s other performances? How does this one compare?

He is an excellent narrator and this book is as good as his other readings.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have done if I'd had time, but it splits easily into parts so I was able to listen in chunks.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book very much.

Untroubled listening, mostly.

It’s clear Mortimer’s main character, Rumpole, is a self-styled maverick of the court-room. I wonder if he would have been thought of as liberal minded, then. Now, Rumpole’s voice is of its time. It all seems so elitist, sexist and racist at the Bar; presumably because it was (maybe still is). What does stand the test of time are not the unpalatable social judgements that are placed before the reader but Rumpole’s wit, his equanimity in the face of defeat and his objectivity.
Mortimer maintains the interest of the reader without challenging us and that is not a bad thing; entertainment rather than searching morality has its value, too.

The narrator is also great. Considering he had to follow in the shoes of the late, great Robert Hardy, his performance is different but distinguished.

The Trials of Rumpole

All John Mortimer's books in the Rumpole series are absolutely brilliant and the best ones are read by Bill Wallis, which this one is. These tales will make you laugh out loud and they are a good antidote for the winter blues!
