About this listen

They watched Danilo Silva for days before they finally grabbed him. He was living alone, a quiet life on a shady street in Brazil; a simple life in a modest home, certainly not one of luxury. Certainly no evidence of the fortune they thought he had stolen. He was much thinner and his face had been altered. He spoke a different language, and spoke it very well. But Danilo had a past with many chapters. Four years earlier he had been Patrick Lanigan, a young partner in a prominent Biloxi law firm. He had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Then one cold winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car and died a horrible death. When he was buried his casket held nothing more than his ashes. Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Certainly it is an enthralling tale. Some bough down in legalities, not this one. I have been concerned that we are about to be hit with more and more courtroom drama, well some is there, but only as an integral part. There is a fabric of undisclosed tale which takes it's grand time in letting you know just what is ahead. Simply. you cannot take this book for granted.

What other book might you compare The Partner to, and why?

No I don't see a copy here, maybe after awhile I might, but not now as I have only just finished the story, it will continue to roll over me for yet a long while. Its a grand taste lingering on the tongue like a good sauce of a Christmas pudding.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Not so much scenes as interludes, the up close conversations were masterful, the first presiding judge in private discussion is presented indeed as a judge with sharp, careful, deep delving, mind. He was one not to miss anything, he did it with style. The lady of the book just grabs one, especially as she is never fully described, like Mona Lisa, she leaves you wondering, yes what ....?

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Oh yes the laughs are there, no cries even with the finale. This is not a Wodehouse volume, no it gave my grey matter a stir to weigh up, to try to penetrate beyond the next little while, to hold things for a moment or two and try to take in just what you think maybe happening here.

Any additional comments?

Yes as a audio book you don't have the eye strain, especially if like me you may "read" during the long night hours. But add to this lazy pleasure, the skill of the narrator, they can easily make or break the tale. The inflection or tone on a throw away phrase or word so often makes a mighty impact that so often builds the fiber of the tome. I love a good voice.

Love John Grisham stories. This one is a little difficult at the beginning laying out the story but then it’s intriguing, suspenseful and ticks along nicely. And such a surprise ending

Love the narrator’s nuances and how he kept himself so involved with the journey. Grisham has allowed this novel to be such a smooth journey for Patrick. Too neat and tidy in so many respects although for that reason I was always waiting for the axe to fall. Eva’s potential to keep the money and disappear was kept from being a forgone conclusion for me because of the way everything went so smoothly. Congratulations Grisham you’ve done it again 👍🏻

Great book - you just never know where his books are going to end up - never predictable. I always enjoy Frank Muller’s narration and love hearing the US Southern accents.

Dissapointed in the ending.

Ever listened to The Hunchback of Notre Dame? Great characterisation and plot , long story with super bad ending. Ok Grisham is not Hugo, but this book shares the same problem. I would have preferred a Disney ending. I feel I wasted my time. Won't bother reading another Grisham now. I'm sure he won't mind.

Loved the story, found it in the vein of Jeffrey Archer. Really good story line, told well and the narration was spot on. Was recommending it to friends until I got to the end. Crap ending - really predictable, disappointing and I thought sloppy. Any ending would have been better. Left a really bad taste after such a good story otherwise.

An enjoyable Grisham novel, though not his best. I found the narrator (who sounds like a stereotypical private eye reading his own journal) difficult to listen to, and distracting from the story itself. Not awful, but his inflections were off-putting. His accents and character dialogue were performed pretty well though.
The ending didn't sit well either, for my liking; it didn't fit with all that had gone before.
Still worth the listen, although future audiobooks narrated by Frank Muller will likely be avoided.
