تحكي الرواية عن المجتمع المصري في الفترة الملكية وبالتحديد في ثلاثينيات القرن الماضي بدءا من عام 1930 فما بعده، في هذه الفترة عاشت القاهرة في ظل انقسام طبقي شديد ما بين صاحب نفوذ وجاه وسلطان وما بين غالبية من الشعب لا تملك مالًا ولا منصبًا ولا جاهًا وإنما أعياهم الفقر عن رؤية الصالح من الطالح الفاسد من النافع، كما انتشرت الرشوة والفساد والواسطة والمحسوبية انتشارًا كبيرًا في شتى نواحي المجتمع وأصبحت تلك الأفعال هي العامة والسائدة بين جموع الشعب..

تبدء الرواية برصد مقطع من حياة أربعة شباب تشاركوا حقبة دراسية معًا وتكونت بينهم علاقة غريبة لا يمكننا تسميتها بالصداقة على الرغم أنَّ نجيب قد وسمهم بـ "الأصدقاء الأعداء"!

الشخصية الرئيسية للرواية هو محجوب عبد الدايم وهو شخص متسلق وصولي يتزوج من إحسان ويتم تعيينه في وظيفة كبيرة بشرط أن يسمح لمديره في العمل بأن يشاركه زوجته ومن هنا تبدأ الحكاية...
