تدور أحداث الرواية في مدينة بودابست، حيث يلتقي الشاعر ماجد الرضواني، الذي كرَّس شعره في مديح الدكتاتور وخلق أمجاد له، بصديقه الشاعر بديع صالح، والذي على النقيض تماماً من الرضواني، فقد رفض الدكتاتورية واختار المنفى منذ أكثر من عشرين عاماً. يدور بين الصديقين حوار طويل مرير نتعرف من خلاله على قصة وطنهما، وسيرة الدكتاتور مع الكثير من دقائقها الخفية ومعاناة جيلهما من الشعراء والمثقفين في بلادهما. كلاري الفتاة المجرية المثقفة والجميلة، والتي تحاول التقريب بين ماجد وبديع، فتستعيد لمحات مما عانته عائلتها من عسف النظم الشمولية الستالينية. وربما يكون هذا الإرث المشترك من المعاناة سبباً في علاقة حب تخوضها مع بديع. الرواية لا تعنى بالكشف عن اسم دكتاتور بعينه ولا بلده، بل تتحدث بالعموميات مشيرة إلى عالمنا العربي، ومعاناة شعوب المنطقة دون تحديد حقبة معينة، مع التركيز على استمرار القمع وتجذر الكوارث. تتصدى الرواية لموضوع الجهل والقمع في العالم العربي وتناقش أسباب تردي الأوطان. فالدكتاتورية ظهرت في بلداننا العربية بأشكال مختلفة ومتطرفة، وعانت منها الشعوب في كل مكان وزمان ودفعت ثمنها ويلات وكوارث. ولا يزال الكثيرون يعانون آلامها ويستغرقون في جدل ونقاش حولها!
