Publisher's Summary

"Let me out! Please...." My tiny fists pound the door, but my voice reverberates off the stone walls and hangs in the air as if suspended by spider’s webs. No one comes....

Years later, a woman is found face-down in a pool of blood. Detective Lottie Parker is called to the remote farmhouse in the bleak Irish countryside. Inside, she finds a scene that speaks of uncontrollable rage: glasses smashed, chairs ripped apart, the woman’s body broken.

A black rain jacket makes Lottie think she knows the killer’s identity, but then she finds a disturbing clue: is the murder linked to an old case at St Declan’s asylum - a case investigated by her own father, just before he took his life?

When another victim is left without her tongue on the hospital steps, and a young girl goes missing, Lottie knows she has to act fast. Can she face her own demons and uncover the truth before another life is taken?

An absolutely gripping book from the best-selling author of The Missing Ones and The Stolen Girls. If you love Rachel Abbott, Angela Marsons, or Robert Dugoni, you’ll be completely hooked.

Best crime series in a long time.

I could not put this book down. Gripingly realistic, absolutely 100% believable, characters are 3 dimensional and on point as you could wish. No cliches, no tricks no slight of hand, just full on damn good story telling at it's best. I quietly hope this is the last in the seies as it just can't get any better. At the same time its so good you want more. 6 stars.

Plot v Character v Narrator

Plot was quit good, it kept me wondering and had those areas where I guessed something’s but not all.
Characters were a little wanting. I couldn’t quite see Lottie.
The narrator, while speaking well, was difficult to follow sometimes during dialogue as the differences were had to discern.

Please make it a movie

I would love to see this turned into film. I've enjoyed the other two books in the series but this one had me on the edge of my seat. It's complicated and surprising. Most of all it's left me urgently craving the next installment in Lottie Parker's life. Can be read as a stand alone. Highly recommend to those who love crime fiction.

Horrible!

Long and extremely drawn out. The entire book is based on some old detective that isn’t hardly a detective. Took me several weeks to tune back in as unfinished books are my backup, but good grief. Horrible. Tune into an infomercial channel before spending actual money on this ridiculous book.

How can a detective be so dumb?

Narrator - great, Story - average, but character development is pretty weak...really dumb at times! I found myself saying, really, you NEVER learn? Even Boyd, who's kind & compassionate, very aware... seriously, he leaves her standing outside her driveway at midnight, after saying "be careful" and drives off without waiting to see if she gets inside? which of course leaves her available to be whacked over the head and kidnapped.
You're worried about your best friend, who then calls you....and you can't be bothered to return her call for days?
And I'm curious, just how many life crises the author thinks one character can suffer before she completely splinters and becomes mental? Or is that what were leading up to, the perfect psycho?
Dad was killed, husband died, herself a druggy, one kid hurts herself, one became a teen mom, one was kidnapped and all three in therapy, and mom ain't a stellar support system. Geesh, give your character a break for a change.

IT'S A SMART CHILD THAT KNOWS HIS OWN FATHER

What made the experience of listening to The Lost Child the most enjoyable?

The characters are very deceiving. Just when you think you've got it, another twist comes along.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

yes. Just when you think you've got it, another twist comes along.

Which scene was your favorite?

The last chapter, when it all falls into place.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Without giving it away, Lottie's eventual confrontation with her mother, Rose.

Any additional comments?

Gibney is a great writer and the narrator is very talented.

Still not sure...

Third installment, but I am uncertain as to go on. A (tired) twist does help in making Lottie’s actions more understandable, but how she deals with all she had found out still seems false. She still lacks the depth of character, I guess I’m looking for. Other than the budding “relationship “ with Boyd, I feel as if I’m not quite interested in how she solves a case( which she only does accidentally) or deals with her addiction or children... I wish she and the overall story was more compelling, yet, I think I just find it a bit boring, unfortunately. I must say, I enjoyed the narration, though.

I really wanted to like this series more. I may leave the sEries here for now and perhaps circle back to it in a few months.

Never Disappointed - Lottie Parker is Number 1!!

I have listened to all 3 books in quick succession and this is probably the best! Maybe its because i feel i know Lottie Parker by now, maybe its because so many of things she thinks or says I can absolutely relate to, or perhaps its because i never, ever, know whats coming next. I am a massive fan of crime books and there are a wealth of good woman characters out there but Lottie is heads and shoulders my favourite. I've loved every single one and confess i am feeling slightly despondent because i can't load up my next one. Come on Patricia, hurry up with the next instalment, because there HAS to be one. Oh and never let anyone but Michele Moran read them to me plse, coz that would be, well just wrong. Thank you!!

A fantastic twist, I didn’t see that coming

I like this writer, very dark stories but very human characters. Some shocking exposures of an old Ireland and its ways, hopefully long gone. Lottie Parker is a loving mother, committed policewoman and a woman on the edge. Not a winning combination but somehow you route for her, she is an old fashioned cop, with right on her side and a taste for the hard stuff. A great read.

Fantastic

Really enjoyed this book. Listened to it in a day. I'm an avid listener to psychological thrillers but dip into books in this series every now and again. However I enjoyed this one so much that I'm going to listen to the next book in this series straight away. If you're dithering about this one then please don't, I'm confident that you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Fabulous narrator

The narrator was superb and I will look out for more books read by her. The characters were interesting and complex with lots of personality touches that made them very realistic. I was completely engaged from the beginning ro the end of the book. The reason for the missing star is down to some credibility-stretching moments in the plot when I found myself thinking: come on! call for back up, or take the obvious action, not the one that allows the perpetrator to keep going! Overall though, a really fresh and twisty listen.

No huge surprise with the twist, though good story overall. Narrator's over pronunciation became very irritating, and was willing the book to be over by the last quarter.
