كان كلب الزعيم من فصيلة "البيتبول"، رمادي اللون، ببقعة بيضاء دائرية كبيرة بين عينيه تميزه عن باقي كلاب فصيلته، أهداه له سياسيٌّ أمريكي صديق، وحينما أراد الزعيم وزوجته أن يختارا له اسمًا، اتفقت خواطر الاثنين بعد يومٍ من التفكير، على تسميته"بريجنيف" على اسم الزعيم السوفيتي الشهير، فقد كانت للكلب النظرة الشامخة البلهاء ذاتها التي تميَّز بها "بريجنيف". ومثله مثل زعيمه، عمر الكلب أكثر مما تعمر الكلاب عادة، وأصبح على مشارف العشرين، يحيا بصحة جيدة مثل زعيمه. حينما كان يلاعبه في أثناء النزهة في داخل القصر برفقة زوجته ورئيسة وزراء دولة أوربّية، ضحكت المرأة حينما سمعت بالاسم، وعقَّبت قائلة: - "أرى أنه يشبهك أنت أيها الزعيم أكثر مما يشبه "بريجنيف استمع لتعرف قصة الزعيم وكلبه من خلال رواية "الزعيم الذي حلم أن يعيش ألف عام" للكاتب أحمد حسام الدين فقط وحصريًا على كتاب صوتي
