فيقول: بعد أن كنا نقدر الذكاء والاضطلاع وخصوبة التجربة وبعد أن كانت أمثالنا الشعبية تكاد تشكل نظرية حياة ملهمة وساطعة الدلول و بعد أن كان المثقف في العصور الوسطى هو (مولانا) حيث لم تكن الثقافة قد انفصلت بعد عن الفقهاء الذين عرف بعضهم بالحكمة والاضطلاع وسعة الحصيلة المعرفية والموسوعية المدهشة وغزارة الانتاج العلمي...ماذا حدث؟

ويرى إدريس في مقالاته أن مرض السطحية والضعف المعرفي أصبح منتشراً حتى لدى نخبة المجتمع من الفنانين والكتاب وهذا لا يحتاج إلى تأمل كما يشير إلى برامج المسابقات التي كان يقدمها التلفزيون وكيف أصابته بالكآبة عندما اكتشف من خلال متابعته لها أن معظم المشتركين فيها معلوماتهم العامة تكاد تساوي صفرا وأنهم لا ينجحون إلا في اجابة السؤال الخاص بالأمثلة الشعبية ومعنى هذا أنهم لا يقرأون وانما يتلقون المعرفة سماعاً !!
