أحبَّ قدماء المصريين الهدهد كثيرًا وهم الذين أطلقوا عليه هذا الاسم الذي انتشر وأصبح معروفًا به في كلّ لغات العالم وهم الذين اختاروه له إذ يترامى إلى آذانهم صوت نقراته لجذوع الأشجار مرددًا: هُد..هُد.

وكان الغريب أن يسعدَ الناس بالهدهد (هادي) بينما هو لم يكن سعيدًا، ذلك أنّه رغب في أن يتقدَّم إلى خطبة هيفاء الجميلة، بل التقى بأبيها على غصن شجرة وقال له إنّه معجبٌ بها لكنها تمنعت لأنَّ كثيرين يرددون على مسامعها أغنياتٍ عذبة وكلمات حلوة جعلتها تحسُّ أنَّ (هادي) ليس هو فتى أحلامها...وعندما تكرر منه هذا الأمر قالت له: أنا لن أتزوج إلّا من ملك الطيور..إنني لن أتزوج إلّا من طائرٍ يضع تاجًا على رأسه !!
